CHENNAI: From how much sugar to take in one’s coffee to the treatment a pregnant diabetic woman required, the audience at V.H.S. Diabetes Department had several questions for the doctors.

The question-answer session came at the end of a programme held to mark ‘World Diabetes Day’ at the department here on Saturday. Head of the V.H.S. Diabetes Department C.V. Krishnaswami said millions of lives were saved since the discovery of insulin in 1922. The department was observing ‘World Diabetes Day’ in accordance with the World Health Organisation theme for this year, which is children and adolescents with diabetes.

“Doctors are increasingly becoming uni-centric specialists. They control the blood sugar level of the patients but for the other problems associated with diabetes, the patients are sent elsewhere,” said VHS secretary N.S. Murali. He added that diabetes needed to be looked at as a condition that affected the whole body and merely controlling sugar levels was not enough.

Patron of Atma Charity Wing, IIT Ladies Club, IIT (Madras), Jayshree Ananth said they were involved in various social activities, including, sponsoring the education of the children of workers, adult literacy programmes, nutritious meal schemes and also contributed to the VHS for juvenile diabetic patients.

“We are fighting a battle against the demons of poverty, neglect and ignorance. But the lesson we learned is that there a lot of good people out there. There a lots of problems waiting to be addressed and there are people willing to join and put their shoulders to the wheel,” she said.

Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Project Ramesh Chandrasekaran called for a campaign against junk food .

Prizes were distributed to children who had participated in the games and competitions organised by the department.
