Study: Greater diabetes chance for smokers
Millions of people who have diabetes are also smokers. Now a new study reveals there may be a reason why the two are linked. Canadian researchers found active smokers had an average 44 percent greater chance of getting diabetes than non-smokers. While doctors have known for a long time that diabetics are often smokers, this was the first time they suggested the two are directly linked.
One theory about how smoking raises the diabetes risk -- nicotine may impair the cells that make insulin, which leads to low blood sugar.
