| Research center wins new grant to advance diabetes research |

Scientists at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) were awarded a new $1.7 million grant to help understand the genetic influences on diabetes.
Dr. Joanne Curran, who is the principal investigator of the study, received the research grant from the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Curran and her colleagues will conduct a detailed investigation on 100 genes that previous SFBR studies have shown play a role in various risk factors for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. In all, there are about 25,000 genes in the human genome. "We're looking for functional changes within the DNA sequence of these particular genes that are causing certain individuals to have these risk factors for diabetes," Curran says. "Our previous work has uncovered genes that are influencing fasting glucose levels, body mass index, and other health traits related to diabetes risk." Through this new study, Curran will look closely at DNA variations within the genes themselves to see how those changes affect the genes' output, and ultimately, how these genes exert their influence on blood glucose, insulin levels and body fat in a person. "Then maybe we can find a way to target a particular gene and manipulate its function so that it doesn't result in high blood glucose levels, for example," Curran adds. There is a need for discovering new methods for preventing and treating diabetes. Rates for Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, continue to climb, especially as obesity rates are reaching epidemic levels. Scientists estimate that there will be 220 million cases of Type 2 diabetes worldwide by 2010.
