Lack of sleep linked to diabetes

All those who have been staying up late at New Year parties better watch out: not getting enough shut-eye could lead to diabetes. Researchers from the University of Chicago found that disturbing the ‘slow wave sleep’ – deep sleep in layman’s terms – of healthy young adults for three nights made them less sensitive to insulin.

This resulted in reduced tolerance of glucose and increased risk of type 2 diabetes, they report in PNAS (study abstract should appear here later).

IMPORTANCE OF ALKALINE FOODS

Diabetic people have a greater tendency to develop hyper acidity. It is because there is slowing down of protein and fat metabolism in them. Generally, the diet for a normal person should include only 20% acidic content while 80% of the food. Citrus fruits alone if taken are highly alkalinizing. But it is quite surprising to know that if the citrus fruits are taken in combination with starches, then they become acid producing. Acid producing foods are chiefly, soft drinks, black tea, tobacco, coffee, etc. Meats should not be combined with starches such as rice, breads, grains. But it can be used with potatoes, carrots, beats etc. The regular ingestion of lettuce, carrots, etc helps a lot in maintaining an alkaline environment.

FOODS HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS
Scientists have discovered from the last several years that human body forms unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals everyday. We really cannot stop it. There free radicals can lead to cell destruction and finally resulting in various forms of chronic diseases. But, by good luck, the body have a defense system against these compounds and they are known as Antioxidants. Though these antioxidants are produced naturally by the human body but they are also found in large quantities in various fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants literally “mopup” radicals.

FOODS RICH IN POTASSIUM
Foods high in potassium are the best treatment for diabetes. It is because the intake of potassium increases the functioning of pancreas. The best dietary sources of potassium are fresh unprocessed foods, including meats, fish, vegetables chiefly potatoes, fruits mainly bananas, dried apricots, Citrus juices such as orange juice, dairy products and whole grains. Mostly potassium needs in a body can be met by eating a varied diet with adequate intake of milk, meats, cercal, vegetables and fruits. Potassium also helps in the normal functioning of kidney. It also plays a major solve in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle contraction.

Holiday Hazards for Diabetics

For anyone, the tempting treats that are part and parcel of the holiday season are a thing to be avoided in excess — from sugary, decorated cookies to free-flowing New Year's champagne.

But for those with diabetes, avoiding these indulgences takes on special importance. Face it: Many of the finger foods and holiday treats served at your typical get-together are loaded with sugar and fat. In addition to their overall caloric intake, those with diabetes must keep a close eye on what they eat — and how much of it they eat — to avoid potentially dangerous fluctuations in their blood sugar levels.
