Diabetes on the Rise

West Virginia's high rate of obesity is being blamed for a huge increase of pregnant women developing diabetes. A new report by the state Bureau for Public Health says the number of pregnant women with type 2 diabetes jumped from 38 in 2000 to 96 in 2005, an increase of 153 percent.
The number of gestational diabetes cases rose 45 percent during the same period, from 595 to 864. Maternal diabetes raises the risk of premature birth, birth defects and complications during pregnancy. It also can make children born to diabetic mothers vulnerable to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Pregnant women with diabetes are more likely to develop hypertension and other health problems.
