Nov. 14, 2007 -- It's World Diabetes Day on Wednesday, and researchers announced they've made an important discovery about what causes juvenile diabetes. According to experts, juvenile diabetes affects about 21 million children worldwide. In the study, researchers analyzed sibling pairs from the U.S. and Great Britain to compare the genes of kids with diabetes to their healthy brothers and sisters. They found two particular genes that are involved in the destruction of insulin cells, which can accelerate the onset of diabetes. Doctors say the discovery of these two new genes may help target a vaccine to prevent Type 1 diabetes. Comments (0)
